Deuteronomy 17:16 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again."
1 King 10: 26, 28 - Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem... Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue… They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver and a horse for a hundred and fifty. They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.
Solomon’s accumulation of Egyptian horses is a great example of someone who chose to disobey the Lord even though he knew better. For all his wisdom and material wealth, he still desired disobedience. He did the same when he married, choosing a princess from Egypt, instead of a bride from Israel. No one can say he made those choices in ignorance of God’s ways.
The longer I am a Christian, the more I concede that the Bible is right when it says that people are born sinners. Just like Solomon, we go our own ways.
It is good to realize the abasement of humanity. Recognition of our true nature releases us into resting in God’s grace and forgiveness. It allows us to humbly accept ourselves and others. It is the antithesis of what the world preaches. When we finally realize we are sinners, we quit trying to follow Christ in our own strength and resources, and are given a wide path of grace.
