Psalm 141:2 - May my prayer be set before you like incense;
may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.
Prayer is likened to incense. Incense creates a potent smoldering fragrance. It can be smelled from far away and lingers long after burning. Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the Bible says, “Those that know how to value God's gracious presence, will be the more fervent in their prayers. When presented through the sacrifice and intercession of the Savior, they will be as acceptable to God as the daily sacrifices and burnings of incense were of old. Prayer is a spiritual sacrifice…” The evening sacrifice also consistently emitted smoke and smells of burning animals.
When we obey the Lord and remain in communion with Him throughout our day, our lives release a pleasing fragrance to God and a stench in the nostrils of the enemy. Ephesians 5:2 states “Live a live of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Philippians 4:18 says that the gifts sent to Paul were “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.”
Let’s press on to be continually in God’s presence.
