We rely so often on the wisdom of this world. The things we invest so much time, money, life energy into are more often than not the things of this world that have little eternal value. And doing that requires wisdom of this world. I know that for me, it is important to DO, to BE, to SEE things accomplished, and I believe God made me that way. But when that piece of who I was created to be draws my focus in an unbalanced and unhealthy way to the things of this world and OFF of the cross, that is foolishness. In 1 Corinthians 1, Paul warns against foolish disputes, he chastises the Corinthian Christians for relying on human wisdom and reminds them: “18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."[c]” Christ’s offer of eternal life with him in heaven, redemption and forgiveness for our sins, that message is the wisdom that I am called to live by. That is the thing of value I have to offer the lost, and that is the true hope that I, as a believer, need to remember each day. The wisdom of man should serve as a vehicle I use to carry that truth, but I need to guard my heart, lest the wisdom of man ever define me. Further down the page, Paul again reminds the believers: “26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
