Mom’s group just made homemade bread last Tuesday, so I’ve had bread on the mind. I think I’ve made six batches the last two weeks, thanks to my Kitchen Aid. The Bible is full of verses about bread. My cookbook says that the earliest yeast bread was found in Egypt, but in Genesis 14, it says that Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine to Abraham. Melchizedek was priest of God Most High. I liked that because it speaks of God initiating communion with us right from the beginning. I also have been mulling over verses such as, “Give us this day our daily bread” from the Lord’s Prayer. It’s not a prayer that stresses over how provision will come tomorrow or next year. And, “I’ve never seen the righteous deserted nor their children begging for bread” comforts me because I want above all for my kids to be taken care of. The Bible is full of God’s examples of provision of bread when times were rough – the Israelites in the wilderness had manna, the widow had miraculous supply bread during famine, and Jesus fed multitudes of people with just two fish and five loaves. I know that Jesus said that He is our true Bread, but it’s good to know He takes care of the temporal, too.
