Job 17:1, 9
My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, and the grave awaits me.
Never the less, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
Job is a confused and broken man, at the point of despair. He has lost nearly everything that he spent his life building. He is bewildered at the scope of the calamity that has befallen him. He has no insight at all why things have so turned against him. He has come to he conclusion that God is angry, and has turned away, perhaps even against him. Job has listened to the counsel of his friends and even carefully searched his heart for some kind of clue that would this terrible turn of events. And though it would seem that Job has lost all hope he says something very telling, “never the less.” You see this glimmer of hope coming through. Job senses in his spirit that God has not forsaken him at all. In the midst of his despair he is able to write “Never the less the righteous will hold to their ways and those with clean hands will grow stronger.”
