Glory Thief

Acts 12:22-24
They shouted, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man."  Immediately, because Herod did not give the praise to God, an angel of the lord struck him down and he was eaten by worms and died.  But the word of God continued to increase and spread.

It is quite remarkable to me, that in the twelfth chapter of Acts, we find evil King Herod, allowed by God, attack and attempt to destroy the men who were the pillars of the early church.  God calls James home by the sword of the evil kings command, but delivers Peter whose life's work was not yet complete.  These heinous crimes against God's beloved saints seemingly go unpunished, at least for the time being.  As I read the story I think to myself, "Herod will get his come the judgment day."  But then this terribly sobering thing happens as the story takes a very unexpected turn.  Herod gives a "public address to the people."  The people trying to curry favor with the King, speak great words of flattery back to him, ascribing to Herod deity and WHAM!!  Because "Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down and he was eaten by worms and died."  It is troubling to ponder how often I have been a "glory thief."  Because Moses was "The most humble man in all the earth,"  God was able to use him to deliver his people.
